SONAE Internationalization with Middle East

SONAE Internationalization with Middle East Sonae entered into an agreement with S. H. Al Mana Group for the development of the Zippy brand in Kuwait, UAE and Qatar.
This partnership will allow Sonae to strengthen the presence of its retail area in the Middle East by opening 10 Zippy stores over the next three years. The inauguration of the first unit is scheduled for 2013 yet.

S. H. Al Mana Group is based in Qatar and is one of the largest business groups in the region, having interests in sectors such as automobile, real estate, hotels & tourism, construction & engineering, media, food and retail, where it represents some of the world's leading brands.

Sonae SR is already present in the Middle East through eight Zippy stores shared by Saudi Arabia and Egypt. After continuous reinforcement in the Iberian Peninsula, Sonae SR entered the Middle East, following the Caucasus, including Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan. More recently it opened the first units in Latin America and North Africa.
Sonae SR started its internationalization strategy in 2008 by opening its own Sport Zone, Worten and Zippy stores in Spain.

In late 2012, the brands of Sonae SR operated 146 stores outside of Portugal, of which 20 through franchising and store-in-store for a total of 158 000 m2 of sales areas, spread over Spain, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Malta, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela, joined by Morocco since 2013.
